Another Day, Another Trip to the ER

Both Jack and Rory have had a cold for the last several days. For Rory this meant lots of snuggles, waking up at the wee hours of the morning for more snuggles and a little more fussing than usual. For Jack though it meant everyone was on high alert.

On Friday his condition worsened, he got upset and found himself unable to breath and unable to recover on his own. Josh rushed into action to get him oxygen and within a few minutes he was tired but back to normal. Saturday we had a few more episodes and called our care team. During this time of year it is best to keep our immuno compromised little ones out of the hospital if at all possible. While it is a place for healing it is also the place where all the sick people go! We made some changes to his settings and increased his breathing treatments. He had a rough night.

Sunday morning he awoke in a complete tizzy. He couldn’t catch his breath and we had to crank the oxygen amount up to 4 liters. We were able to get it back down to 2 liters but with every flick of discomfort we were right back at 4. We called the care team again and unfortunately we were at a point where we were not comfortable not knowing what was going on. So off to the ER we went. As per usual the minute we stepped into the hospital and all the pretty nurses and doctors were around Jack was blowing kisses and giving high-fives and making us look like crazy people because how could this adorable happy baby be sick!?

They did x-rays and ran a respiratory panel to check for bacterial pneumonia and/or a viral respiratory infection. We settled in to wait for results and watch the Chiefs game.

While the Chiefs could not pull off a W, all of Jack’s tests came back negative for any infections. However, his secretions tested positive for yeast so we got a prescription and got to go back home that night which was a huge relief. By the time we walked in the front door we were all pooped and since Rory was away having his first ever sleepover with Granny, Jack got a heaping dose of the ‘get better snuggles’.

While we still have a few runny noses we are off of oxygen completely and and back to our regularly scheduled breathing treatments. Is flu and RSV season over yet? I hope you and yours are hanging in there and staying healthy!
